{Fabric Friday} Lucienne Day...

If you haven't guessed already, I love researching & learning new things. My latest research obsession is learning more about the British textile designer, Lucienne Day. I often discover things when I'm too busy to really sink my teeth into researching, only to discover them again later- when the timing is right. That's the case with Lucienne Day. She died last year around this time - which received quite a bit of press. There was an article in Dwell Magazine called, "Britain's Mid-Century Female Designers" that caught my attention last year. I remember reading it, getting excited, then putting my magazine on the towering stack of Dwell Mags in my studio. I never followed up on the research until this week when I repeatedly found her name pop on my search for vintage fabrics & made that connection. I'm such a huge fan of Ray and Charles Eames and Lucienne Day & her husband Robin are sort of like the British equivalent. While I do love Ray Eames' textile designs, I think I'm drawn to Lucienne's designs more....

I've always enjoyed reading about creative couples throughout art/design history. I find it interesting to see how they inspire, influence, & nurture each others creative journey. I suppose that's why I married another artist. I also devour information about women artists & designers that paved the way for me to be doing what I'm doing today. I'm sure this won't be the last you will hear about Lucienne Day from me- this is just an introduction, as my research has really just begun. I actually have the exhibit catalog from "Art by the Yard: Women Design Mid-Century Britain" on order- can't wait to get it into my hands. Happy Fabric Friday! Hope you have a weekend full of cool discoveries....

big ideas & adding machines...

I'm knee deep in stacks of papers with visions of numbers & colored files dancing in my head today. Ah, tax time...gotta love it. It may be a little quiet in klt:sketchbook land in the next few days. But I will leave you with this really cool video that my friend Daria sent me a link to. She always has a way of knowing what my mood is. This sort of summed it up for me. It's pretty genius (it's slow to start so be patient... something more will happen). Thanks D- it's very cool indeed!  {images via here, here, here, & here}

Office supply stores here I come! Maybe by the end of the day I will be able to make some music like that with my calculator, printer, & file cabinet....

{Everyday Inspiration} dreaming of vintage...

{picture via hutch studio}
Chris has created beautiful interior spaces at hutch studio & visiting him there is always inspiring. Each room is filled lots of vintage finds and recycled, handmade creations. This room at hutch is called the "sweet room" and I'm always taking note of the way the shadows are cast, how the light fills the room, the textures, & the color palette. I made an Etsy treasury last night that reflects how I feel when I'm in that room & the colors that I see. These are items & images that may appear in my dreamworld....

You can view this Etsy Treasury live here.  Hope you are having a nice week!

{Music Monday} Hello Sam Beam....

If you are a music lover, then you know that new releases come out on Tuesdays. Well tomorrow, the new Iron & Wine is coming out & I'm looking forward to it. I've been getting little sneak listens lately both with this Daytrotter Sessions video & the four song, acoustic set for NPR's  Tiny Desk  series and like what I hear. I've been listening to old Iron & Wine all weekend & I'm ready for the new stuff. Happy Music Monday! What are you listening to?

{fun} A family of squirrels...

Having a small business means that not only do I wear many hats, but so does my family.  I got a call Friday at the end of the work day, pretty much telling me what our evening activity would be. I get my tees screen printed locally (about 5 minutes from my house) & my new squirrel tees were ready to pick up. My guys had no idea what I had planned for them when I got home. While it took a while to get into the modeling groove, things picked up quickly with some dancing & harmonica playing...

Even though I'm sometimes met with resistance to these spontaneous photo shoots, in the end - I think we all have fun. The best part is that I have pretty consistent documentation of our little family. Work & play all at once - that's the name of the game in our house these days. Your can view the new squirrel tees here too. Hope you had a great weekend!
